Game Audio Event Mindset: Finding JOMO at Gamescom

Game audio event mindset becomes essential during big industry gatherings like Gamescom, where excitement often comes bundled with pressure. This article expands on an idea originally shared on LinkedIn:
Original Post Here.

Gamescom is coming. And you know what usually comes with it? FOMO.

That creeping feeling that you’re missing something important while everyone else seems to be closing million-dollar deals over dinner.

Why Game Audio Event Mindset Matters During Gamescom

Major events can be inspiring, but they can also be overwhelming.

Social feeds fill up with packed meeting schedules, big-name handshakes, and highlight reels.

For many professionals, especially newcomers, this creates the impression that networking is a competition.

But a healthier game audio event mindset begins by realizing something simple:

Your experience does not need to match anyone else’s to be valuable.

From FOMO to JOMO in Game Development Events

What changed everything for me was learning about JOMO:

The Joy of Missing Out.

JOMO means embracing your own rhythm.

It means understanding that fewer meetings does not mean fewer opportunities.

Being present at the event already opens up thousands of possibilities.

Building Meaningful Connections With the Right Mindset

Each year, I’ve understood a little more about how to move through these events.

When you show up with an open mind and heart, you start to attract conversations that matter to your journey, not someone else’s highlight reel.

When I embraced JOMO:

  • I stopped stressing about getting back to the hotel early
  • I stopped comparing my schedule to others
  • I stopped feeling like I was falling behind
  • I started focusing on why I came in the first place

This shift is at the core of a healthier game audio event mindset.

Gamescom as a Space for Community and Mentorship

If you’re heading to Gamescom for the first time, I truly hope this helps.

Events are not about performing visibility. They are about building real relationships in the game audio community.

If there’s enough interest, casual mentorship rounds can be a wonderful way to share perspectives in a relaxed environment.

Checklist: Practicing a Healthy Game Audio Event Mindset

  • Remember that your rhythm is valid
  • Focus on presence, not packed schedules
  • Seek conversations that align with your journey
  • Stop comparing your event experience to highlight reels
  • Embrace JOMO as professional grounding

Common Mistakes People Make at Industry Events

  • Equating meeting count with success
  • Networking performatively instead of authentically
  • Letting FOMO drive anxiety and comparison
  • Forgetting that meaningful connections happen slowly

A healthy game audio event mindset helps prevent these traps and makes events more human.
